[HRC #1] Price Dynamics & Tolerance: The "Weight Game"

"SS400 is the Dollar, but HRC is the Gold Standard."
Hot Rolled Coil (HRC) is the mother of all finished steel products (Pipes, Sheets, Beams). Therefore, the HRC price is the Global Benchmark Index for the entire steel industry.
If HRC prices jump in China today, pipe prices in Vietnam will jump tomorrow.

But today, we look deeper. We analyze the "Hidden Profit" that mills and traders make through a technical loophole: Negative Tolerance.

1. The Price Mechanism: Why HRC Moves First

HRC is the most liquid steel asset. Its price is determined by the "Spread" between raw materials and demand.

  • Cost Push: Iron Ore ($) + Coking Coal ($) + $150 (Conversion Cost) = HRC Base Price.
  • Trader's Tip: Don't watch the pipe price. Watch the HRC Futures (SHFE) and Iron Ore Spot prices. They predict the future of finished goods by 2-3 weeks.

2. The "Weight Game": Theoretical vs. Actual

This is the #1 Secret in steel trading. Why is some HRC cheaper than others?

⚖️ The Tolerance Trap

  • Nominal Thickness: You order 5.0mm.
  • The Standard (JIS/ASTM): Allows a tolerance of ±0.3mm.
  • The Trick: The mill intentionally rolls it at 4.75mm (Negative Tolerance).
  • The Result: The coil is 5% lighter than the theoretical weight.

Profit Logic: If you buy by "Actual Weight" and sell by "Theoretical Weight," you instantly pocket a 5% margin without doing anything. This is why "Cheap HRC" exists.

3. Buying Strategy: Actual or Theoretical?

When negotiating HRC, you must clarify the Weight Basis.

Basis Implication
Actual Weight You pay for what is physically on the scale. (Fair)
Theoretical Weight You pay for the calculated volume (Volume x 7.85). If the mill uses negative tolerance, you pay for air.

Expert Verdict: Check the Tolerance Clause

Never just look at the Unit Price ($/ton).
A supplier offering $550/ton (Theoretical Wt) might be more expensive than a supplier offering $560/ton (Actual Wt).
Always ask: "Is this price based on Actual or Theoretical Weight?"
