"Steel is Steel, right?"
Wrong.
To the untrained eye, two coils of HRC look exactly the same. But chemically, they can be as different as a Brick and a Rubber Band.
Today, we compare the two most common grades in the world: SS400 (The Brick) and SAE1006 (The Rubber Band). Mixing them up is the fastest way to lose a client.
1. SS400: The Generalist (Construction)
SS400 (JIS Standard) is the most traded "Commodity Grade." Think of it as a sturdy brick.
- Characteristics: High strength but relatively hard. It contains more Carbon and impurities compared to drawing grades.
- Use Case: Simple structures like bridges, building frames, or general plates where you need structural integrity, not flexibility.
2. SAE1006: The Specialist (Drawing)
SAE1006 (ASTM Standard) is a "Low Carbon" steel. Think of it as a rubber band.
- Characteristics: Soft and ductile. Low Carbon (max 0.08%) allows it to stretch and bend without breaking.
- Use Case: Pipe making (forming round shapes), Cold Rolling (re-rolling), and automotive parts stamping.
| Grade | Carbon Content | Key Property | Main Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| SS400 | High (No upper limit) |
Strength (Hard) |
Structures, Bridges |
| SAE1006 | Low (Max 0.08%) |
Formability (Soft) |
Pipes, Tubes, Drawing |
3. The Fatal Mistake: "Substitution"
Why do traders make mistakes? Because SS400 is usually cheaper. But substituting grades to save a few dollars can destroy your business.
- Scenario: You sell cheap SS400 to a pipe manufacturer who asked for SAE1006.
- The Result: When the factory tries to roll the steel into a pipe, the SS400 is too hard. It doesn't bend; it snaps.
- Damage: You will see Micro-Cracks along the weld line. The entire production line stops. Claim value: 100% of the cargo.
Before you quote a price, ask the customer: "What are you making with this?"
- Building a warehouse? 👉 Sell SS400.
- Making pipes or car parts? 👉 Sell SAE1006.
