[Coated #2] The Invisible Scam: Zinc Coating Weight (Z-Designation)

In the steel market, the most critical quality factor is the one you cannot see.

You can check the thickness of the steel with a caliper. You can check the width with a tape measure.
But can you visually check the Zinc Coating Weight?

Impossible. It is invisible to the naked eye.
This is why "Zinc Coating Weight" is the biggest source of price difference in the coated steel industry.

1. What is "Z-Designation"?

When you buy GI or GL, you see codes like Z40, Z100, Z275.
This tells you how much Zinc is on the steel (grams per square meter).

  • Z40 (40g/m²): Economical. Good for indoor use or temporary structures.
  • Z120 (120g/m²): Standard. Good balance of price and life.
  • Z275 (275g/m²): Premium. Lasts 20+ years. The global standard for high-quality roofing.

Rule of Thumb: More Zinc = Longer Life = Higher Cost.

2. The Price Trap: "You Get What You Pay For"

Here is a common misunderstanding in the market.

Buyer: "I need GI coil, Z275 grade."
Supplier A (Market Price): "$880/ton."
Supplier B (Below Market): "$800/ton."

The buyer often chooses Supplier B to save money. The coil arrives. It looks shiny and perfect.
But technically, it might be Z60 or Z80, not Z275.

This is not always a "scam." It is often a result of demanding a price that is too low for the requested spec.
Real Z275 requires more zinc, which costs money. If the price is too low, the zinc layer must be thinner.

3. How to Verify Quality?

Since you cannot see the zinc layer, you need to verify it scientifically.

Method Description
1. Coating Gauge Use a portable "Magnetic Thickness Gauge". It separates the steel thickness from the zinc thickness.
2. The "Weighing" Test Cut a sample. Weigh it. Remove the zinc with acid. Weigh it again. The difference is the zinc weight. (Lab required).
3. MTC Check Ask for the Mill Test Certificate. Ensure the "Zinc Coating Mass" matches your contract.

💡 Note: Don't Trust "Spangles" Alone

Some buyers think: "Big flowers (Spangles) on the surface mean lots of Zinc!"

This is a myth.
Spangle size depends on the cooling process, NOT the zinc thickness.
You can have beautiful big spangles with only Z40 coating.
Don't judge the quality by its look. Judge it by the data.

Final Advice

If the price is significantly lower than the market average, check the specs again.
There is no magic in manufacturing costs.

Always specify the Z-coating weight clearly in your contract.
We provide exactly what you pay for, with full transparency and PMI testing.
