[Coated #3] The Makeup: PPGI & The "Chalking" Nightmare

[Coated #3] The Makeup: PPGI & The "Chalking" Nightmare

Steel needs makeup, too. We call it PPGI (Pre-Painted Galvanized Iron) or Color Coated Steel.

It looks beautiful when it is new. Red, Blue, Green... perfectly shiny.
But often, after just 1 or 2 years under the sun, a nightmare begins.

The color fades, and when you touch the roof, white powder comes off on your hand.
This is called "Chalking."

1. What is Chalking?

Chalking is the sunburn of steel.
The Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun break down the resin in the paint. The paint pigment loses its bond and turns into dust (powder).

Once chalking starts, the steel loses its protection and will soon start to rust.
Why does this happen? Because you chose the wrong paint type.

2. The Paint Grades: PE vs. SMP vs. PVDF

Not all "Color Steel" is the same. The secret is in the paint chemistry.

Paint Type Durability Best Use & Characteristics
PE (Polyester) 3-5 Years Standard & Cheap.
Good for indoor use, sandwiches panels, or temporary fences.
Weak against strong UV sunlight.
SMP 8-12 Years Better. (Silicone Modified Polyester).
Resists chalking much better than PE. Good for standard roofing.
PVDF 20+ Years The King. (Fluorocarbon).
Almost immune to UV rays. Used for airports, high-rise buildings, and luxury villas.
Most expensive, but stays new forever.

3. How to Avoid the Nightmare?

Many buyers make a mistake: they negotiate the Steel Price aggressively, but forget to ask about the Paint Type.

To meet a low target price, factories often use Standard PE paint instead of High Durable Polyester (HDP) or SMP.
The result? A roof that turns white in 2 years.

Your Checklist:

  • Indoor / Temporary? → Go for PE. (Save money).
  • Outdoor / Roofing? → Minimum SMP or HDP.
  • High-End Project? → Must use PVDF.

Final Thoughts

Don't just buy "Blue Steel." Buy "Blue Steel with SMP Paint."
One line in your contract can save your building's face.

We supply all ranges of PPGI, from standard PE to premium PVDF.
Tell us your project, and we will prescribe the right paint.
