[Tech] Wear Resistant Steel: Hardox vs. NM Grades (The "Hard" Game)

"Selling Mild Steel (SS400) is like selling rice. Selling Wear Resistant Steel is like selling weapons."
If a dump truck or excavator bucket were made of standard steel, the rocks would punch a hole through it in a week. That's why the world needs Wear Resistant (WR) Steel.
This niche market commands prices 2-3 times higher than commodity steel. Today, we compare the "iPhone" of this world (Hardox) with the "Android" (NM Grades).

1. The Champions: Hardox vs. NM Series

When a buyer asks for "AR Plate" (Abrasion Resistant), you have two main choices.

Brand / Grade Origin Characteristics
Hardox
(SSAB)
Sweden / USA The Premium Standard. Excellent flatness, consistent hardness, and superior weldability. Expensive, but guarantees lifespan.
NM Grades
(NM400/500)
China The Cost Killer. "NM" stands for "Nai-Mo" (Wear Resistant). Quality varies by mill, but price is 30-40% cheaper than Hardox.

2. The Language of Hardness: Brinell (HBW)

In this market, we don't talk about Tensile Strength. We talk about Brinell Hardness (HB).

  • HB 400 (Hardox 400 / NM400): The "All-Rounder." Good balance of hardness and toughness. Easy to weld and bend. Used for dump truck bodies and containers.
  • HB 500 (Hardox 500 / NM500): The "Rock Crusher." Very hard but brittle. Used for mining crushers and cutting edges. Warning: Difficult to bend.
  • HB 600+: Extreme wear only. Cement mixers, concrete chutes. Almost impossible to machine.

3. Fabrication Tips: How Not to Crack It

Wear steel is high-carbon and sensitive to heat. Beginners often crack the plate during welding.

🔥 The Golden Rule: Pre-Heating

  • The Risk: If you weld a cold HB 500 plate, the rapid cooling will cause "Hydrogen Cracking."
  • The Fix: For plates thicker than 20mm, you MUST pre-heat the steel to 100°C ~ 150°C before welding.
  • Cutting: Use Laser or Plasma cutting. Avoid Oxy-fuel cutting if possible, as it destroys the hardness at the edge (HAZ - Heat Affected Zone).

4. Scam Alert: Spotting Fake Hardox

Because Hardox is famous, counterfeits are everywhere in Asia.

  1. The Paint Mark: Genuine Hardox has a full-surface red primer with repeated white/black text. Fakes often use stencils that look "sprayed on" manually.
  2. The Portable Tester: Bring a "Leeb Hardness Tester" to the warehouse. If the certificate says NM400 but your tester reads HB 220, run away. It's just painted mild steel.
  3. The QR Code: SSAB MTCs have traceable QR codes. Scan them.

Expert Verdict: Value vs. Cost

When to sell Hardox: To mining companies or OEM manufacturers who care about "Total Cost of Ownership" (Machine downtime is expensive).
When to sell NM Grades: To aftermarket repair shops or cost-sensitive construction projects in developing nations.
