[Logistics #4] Export Packaging: How to Stop the "Rust Rain"

Hello, this is Global Steel Insight.
In our previous post, we solved the "Fake MTC" crisis. Now your products are perfect—verified, certified, and ready to ship to the USA or Germany.

But imagine this nightmare: Your customer opens the container after 40 days at sea and finds... a pile of rusty scrap metal.
This tragedy happens more often than you think. Today, we discuss the "Last Line of Defense": Seaworthy Export Packaging.

1. Know Your Enemy: The "Container Rain"

Why does steel rust at sea? The culprit is Condensation.

☔ The Science of Rust

  • The Sauna Effect: A container crosses the equator. It gets hot (60°C) during the day and cold (20°C) at night.
  • Dew Point: This rapid temperature drop causes moisture in the air to condense and drip like rain inside the container. We call this "Container Rain."
  • Result: If salt air meets this water, even the best steel will rust red in just one week.

2. Chemical Defense: VCI & Desiccants

Wrapping with normal plastic wrap is useless. You need a chemical shield.

Solution How It Works
VCI Paper/Film Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor.
It releases invisible gas molecules that create a shield on the steel surface. When unpacked, the gas vanishes cleanly.
Desiccants (Silica Gel) The Sponge.
You must hang "Super Dry" bags inside the container to absorb the moisture. Rule of Thumb: At least 1.0 kg per 20ft container.

3. Physical Defense: Shoring & Lashing

Rust is bad, but Physical Damage is worse. Steel is heavy. If a 5-ton coil moves inside the container during a storm, it will punch through the wall.

  • ISPM 15 (The Wood Rule): You must use wooden skids/crates to support the steel. But be careful! All wood must be Heat Treated & Fumigated (IPPC Stamp). Without this stamp, Customs will destroy your cargo.
  • Lashing & Chocking: Use wire ropes or high-strength belts to tie the steel to the container floor rings. Use wooden blocks (Chocking) to prevent rolling.

4. Expert Verdict: "Packaging is Insurance"

I have seen this tragedy too many times: A company spends thousands on manufacturing, saves $50 on packaging, and ends up air-freighting replacements due to a rust claim.

"Penny-wise, Pound-foolish."
Always ask for a quote including "Seaworthy VCI Packing" from the start. If you ask later, the price will double. Packaging is not a cost; it is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
