If you need steel that cuts other steel, standard Carbon Steel (like S45C) is useless. It will bend or break immediately.
You need Tool Steel.
Among them, SKD11 (JIS Standard), also known as AISI D2, is the absolute "King of Cold Work."
It is the material of choice for slitter knives, press dies, and high-end tactical knives.
Today, we analyze why this steel is so legendary.
1. The Chemistry: Why is it so Hard?
Steel hardness usually comes from Carbon. SKD11 has a massive amount of it.
| Element | Role |
| Carbon (1.4~1.6%) | Extreme Hardness. (Compare to S45C which has only 0.45%). |
| Chromium (11~13%) | Wear Resistance & Semi-Stainless properties. |
| Molybdenum (0.8%) | Deep hardening and toughness. |
| Vanadium (0.2%) | Refines the grain structure for sharper edges. |
2. Cold Work vs. Hot Work (SKD11 vs SKD61)
Buyers often confuse SKD11 with SKD61 (H13). They are total opposites.
- SKD11 (Cold Work): Used at room temperature. Extreme wear resistance. Used for cutting, punching, and shearing.
- SKD61 (Hot Work): Used at high temperatures. Resists heat fatigue. Used for aluminum die-casting molds or plastic injection molds.
Rule: If you are cutting metal, use SKD11. If you are melting metal, use SKD61.
3. "Semi-Stainless" Property
Because SKD11 contains 12% Chromium, it sits right on the border of being "Stainless Steel" (which requires 10.5%+ Cr).
While it is not fully rust-proof like 304, it resists corrosion much better than standard carbon steel.
This is why custom knife makers love D2 steel. It holds a sharp edge forever and doesn't rust easily.
4. Heat Treatment Warning (The "Air" Secret)
SKD11 is supplied in an "Annealed" (Soft) condition. You must heat treat it to reach HRC 58-60.
⚠️ Critical Warning: Do NOT Use Water
SKD11 is an "Air Hardening" steel.
If you quench it in water, the thermal shock will cause it to crack or shatter instantly.
It must be cooled slowly in still air or inert gas vacuum furnaces.
Final Thoughts
SKD11 is expensive, but it pays for itself. A die made of S45C might last 1,000 hits. A die made of SKD11 will last 1,000,000 hits.
For high-precision manufacturing, SKD11 is not an option; it is a necessity.
