[Mindset] Red Flags: The "Yes Man" Trap & The Art of Saying No

"In the world of steel, 'Everything is Possible' means 'I am lying'."
In global trade, the most dangerous words are not "We cannot do it." The most dangerous words are: "No problem! We can do everything you want!"

Through my decades of experience—from my youth until my hair turned gray—I have learned one golden truth: A supplier who agrees to everything is gambling with your money.
Today, I share how to spot the "Yes Man" and find a true "Strategic Partner."

1. The Red Flag: The "Yes Man"

If you ask for a complex requirement—like "ASTM A36 with ±0.01mm tolerance at the cheapest market price"—and the supplier says "Yes" instantly?

🚨 Warning Signs

  • Ignorance: They don't understand the technical difficulty of the request.
  • Deception: They plan to secure the deposit first, then deliver off-spec goods later ("Bait and Switch").
  • Desperation: They are so desperate for cash flow that they will sign any contract.

2. The Green Flag: The "Difficult" Partner

The best partners I have ever worked with were actually the "most annoying" ones at first. They challenged me.

  • They Ask "Why?": "Why do you need this chemical composition? What is the final End-Use?" They want to ensure the steel won't crack during your heat treatment.
  • They Say "No": "We cannot achieve that tolerance with Hot Rolled steel. You must switch to Cold Drawn, but it costs more."

Initially, you might find this annoying. But these are the people you can trust. They are not just selling iron; they are providing Technical Insurance.

3. The "Litmus Test" Strategy

How do you test a new supplier? Use this psychological trick.

🧪 The Impossible Request Test

Deliberately ask for a specification that is technically impossible or contradictory (e.g., High Carbon content but High Weldability).

  • Supplier A ("Yes Man"): "No problem, send the PO." (→ Reject immediately)
  • Supplier B ("The Pro"): "This spec is dangerous. High Carbon will crack if welded. We recommend changing the grade." (→ This is your partner)

Final Verdict: Buy the Advice, Not Just the Metal

Steel is a commodity. Anyone can sell it.
But Wisdom is rare. Choose the partner who asks the right questions and has the courage to say "No" to protect your business.

Their "stubbornness" is not arrogance; it is the ultimate sign of Professionalism.
